TOMEI vs. Perrin Equal Length Headers

We have been asked the differences between TOMEI and Perrin equal length headers. The Perrin EQL has an inlet of 35mm vs. TOMEI’s 40mm. The outlet on the Perrin EQL is 51mm vs. TOMEI’s 56mm. The smaller size yields less power gain.

The pictures will allow you to see the differences in welding, port and finish work. TOMEI also includes an extra bolt on the up pipe vs. Perrin’s two bolt. This will lessen the chance of an exhaust leak.

TOMEI – MSRP: $790 but thorough EAT Motorsports this unit is available for $750. This INCLUDES header wrap AND an up pipe. We offer a one year warranty which includes warranty protection from cracking.

Perrin – MSRP: $750 - which only includes the headers; wrap and up-pipe are extra!

It should be pretty easy to see which one is the better option.

Tuning day @ EAT Motorsports

A few weeks ago we had a Legacy GT, STI and two EVO Xs stop by for an ECU remap/reflash. On this record hot day, we reflashed the EVO Xs using the WORKS P2 Brain Flash. This raised the power from 230WHP to approx 300WHP with only a flash and a new boost hose! The power band was smoothed out and provided more low end torque. The best part about getting a flash through WORKS is that if Mitsubishi declines your warranty because of WORKS products, WORKS will match the warranty.

The Legacy GT received a road tune using COBB AccessPort with COBB pro-tune software. This effectively raised and utilized more of the power from the already installed Polka pickle turbo, equal length headers, Power Enterprise injectors as well as FMIC.

Blitz Nur Spec-R

Wanting better performance and sound out of his STI, Tae dropped by our shop on Monday to have us fit it with the Blitz Nur Spec-R exhaust system. The install was quick and straight forward due to the build quality from Blitz. This setup features 80mm piping from the cat-back and also includes a silencer to keep cops at bay J The Nur Spec-R exhaust is in stock and available through us at EAT Motorsports at $650.00.

North Cascade Loop Cruise

We had a great time joining our fellow Subaru enthusiasts on the North Cascade Loop Cruise. Total vehicles in attendance was just under 100 cars. It was a picture perfect day and we logged right around 440 miles on our odometer.

Tanabe G35 Y-Pipe Install

Anthony stopped by last week to replace his stock Y-Pipe on his G35. In the pictures, you can tell that his ride height is extremely low and as a result, the flex pieces on the stock Y-pipe took a beating. He opted to have us install a shiny new Tanabe Y pipe that is far less restrictive than the stock unit.

This modification completed his aftermarket header to tailpipe installation. Anthony’s G35 also sports the Kenstyle body kit and with Peter visiting to pick up his Rally Armor mud flaps, we decided to have a really quick photo shoot.

HKS Turbo Timer Install

We recently installed an HKS Turbo Timer on a MazdaSpeed3. Having been replaced twice before, the owner wanted to extend the life of his new turbo with this setup. The install was a breeze and the overall result was a clean look on the dash. We would have preferred to hide the wire but this install would allow for easy removal.

Cusco Roll Cage Guide

With so many options and variations of Cusco Roll Cages I put together this guide to help answer technical questions regarding the cages and find out which is the correct roll cage for you.

General Information
Cusco Roll Cages comes in many shape sand sizes but the standard construction among all the roll cages are a 40mm diameter tubular frame with either bolt or weld together joints. Each leg of the roll cage has a base plate that can be either welded into the vehicle or bolted into the chassis. The Cusco Roll Cages are made to order and each one is custom made to fit the driver preference.

Roll Cage Selection
This part of the guide will walk you thru the basic process of roll cage selection. Please note since the Cusco makes roll cages for over 300 vehicle applications not all vehicle will have full selection of roll cage options. If you have any questions feel free to contact your nearest Cusco distributor for more information.

1. Cusco Roll Cage Material Selection
Cusco Roll Cages comes in two different types of material D1 Chromoly and Safety 21 Steel.

The Cusco D1 Roll Cage was designed for the D1GP Drifter Series in Japan. The chromoly material used roughly 33% lighter then your conventional Safety 21 Steel. This material is made to absorb light to medium impact with out jeopardizing the structural integrity of the cage and comes in a shiny Cusco metallic blue finish. The D1 chromoly are great choice weather if it’s for a high end show/track car or a daily driver.

With a long line of racing heritage Cusco’s Safety 21 roll cage has been test and implemented into multiple style of racing such as Cusco’s GT300 and Cusco’s Rally Team. The Safety 21 roll cages are constructed of carbon steel and can withstand heavy impact. These roll cages are recommend for heavy track use or if you’re simply on a tight budget.

2. Manufacture and Chassis Code
The next step is selecting your vehicle manufacture and chassis code. Since Cusco is manufacture and developed in Japan and not all the cars in Japan have the same production time and name as its US counterpart, we must go by the chassis code in order to insure the correct fitment for your roll cage. If you have any question as to what your cars chassis code is please consult http://www.wikipedia.org/.

3. Sunroof
The sunroof in your vehicle plays a key factor into the roll cage fitment. Cusco only makes a handful of cages that are sunroof compliant. If you have a sunroof in your vehicle and there is no sunroof compliant roll cage you have to make a basic modification to the roll cage in order for it to fit the vehicle. The modification process consists of shortening each leg of the roll cage to compensate for the sunroof thickness when compared to the same car with out a sunroof.

4. C Pillar Bar Style
The C Pillar variation gives you extra the customization when it comes to deciding what type of roll cage is right for you. Currently there are 3 types of C Pillar Bars, Window Style, Roof Style, and Race Style.

The term window style means the C Pillar Bar is bent out and it runs along the edge of the rear window going around the rear seats. This style of bar is primarily used on a 2 door vehicle wanting to retain it’s rear seats to carry additional passenger or simply keep the car interior closest to stock as possible.

Cusco 6 Point Window Style

The term roof style means the C Pillar Bar runs along the edge of the roof and down the C Pillar over the rear seats to the C Pillar mounting position. This style of bar is primarily used on a 4 door vehicle where the C Pillar bar won’t block the entering and exiting of the rear passengers and leaves the rear seats intact.

Cusco 6 Point Roof Style

The Cusco race style roll cage is the most popular application out of the group. The race style term means the C Pillar Bar runs directly thru the rear seats the shortest distance between the B Pillar Bar to the C Pillar Mounting position. This style of bar configuration is the sturdiest out of all the C Pillar Bar however this requires the removal of rear seats and interior pieces. This style of bar is recommended for track use or 2 seater vehicle.

5. How Many Points?
The number of points in a roll cage determines the size and number of bars on the roll cage. The general rule of thumb is anything below 5 point will only have B Pillar Bars and the C Pillar Bars, anything above 6 point will have A, B, and C Pillar Bars which extends from front of the dash to rear suspension tower or trunk or the vehicle. Since there is no universal pattern among roll cage manufacture point system please refer to the chart below to find out exactly how many points you need.

6. To Dash Escape or Not?
Any Cusco roll cage 6 point or more has the option of Dash Escape on the A Pillar Bar. This means you have the option of choosing weather if the A Pillar Bar goes thru the dashboard or bend around the curvature of the dashboard. This option eases the install of the roll cage but at the same time it loses structural rigidity. Dash Escape should primarily be used on street driven or show cars; track cars should avoid this option and get the standard thru the dash mount.

7. C Pillar Bar Mount Position
The C Pillar Mount Position refers to the general area where the C Pillar Bar will be mounted. This mount position is not optional; Cusco has already chosen pre-designated area on each specific vehicle to insure maximum safety.

Forester XT Brembo Upgrade!

Earlier in the month Meng had us install his Zero/Sports sway bars (above). With the upgraded power and cornering capabilities of this Forester XT, Meng felt that he should also step up his braking power.

He arrived at EAT with a complete Brembo front and rear brake kit. Not only are the rotors bigger but the rear calipers now get two pistons per corner while the front gets four per corner. He also upgraded his master cylinder to the STI unit and reinforced it with the Cusco Master Cylinder Brace.

To dress up his engine bay, Meng had us install the Zero/Sports intake pipe and Zero/Sports 1.3 radiator caps.

30k + Zero/Sports Intake

James stopped by for his 30k service. We saw this as an opportunity to replace all his factory Subaru fluids with Motul synthetic fluids. This consisted of Engine oil, Transmission, Rear Differential, Coolant and Brake Fluids. While flushing everything out, we also replaced the cabin filter which, as you can see, was put to really good use.

James also wanted to upgrade his intake so we recommended the Zero/Sports air intake kit.

07 Forester gets Zero/Sports sway bar treatment

Meng recently stopped by with his 07 Forester. With his second kid on the way in less than a month, he wanted to get his last minute mods done and out of the way.

Meng likes performance without sacrificing drivability and comfort. When he visited us two weeks ago, he had asked us to install his front Perrin sway bar to match his already installed rear sway. After the install, both he and his wife noticed an increase in clunking noise and a decrease in ride quality.

We recommended that he replace the Perrin bars with the Zero/Sports units for superior quality and hollow design. The Zero/Sports sway bars weigh a mere 4lbs vs the Perrin 14lbs.

Zero/Sports Sway Bars will drastically reduce body roll without decreasing ride comfort.

The Zero/Sports Sway Bars feature a unique lightweight tubular design. The hollow tube design gives the bars a stiffer response to twisting forces than a similar solid sway bar. These easy to install sway bars will improve handling, steering wheel response, and will reduce your cars natural tendency to under steer in corners.
If you use a solid core structure stabilizer, we insist you try our product, you will definitely feel the difference!

For maximum performance, we suggest using the front and rear as a set!

Zero/Sports 76mm Air Intake Pipe Install

EJ stopped by the shop and mentioned that he wanted to dress up his engine bay but retain his stock air box. The polished Zero/Sports intake pipe was an excellent solution for EJ.

The Zero/Sports intake pipe is less restrictive than stock and also looks a lot better than OEM! To keep the theme consistent under the hood, we also replaced the OEM intercooler hose with a color matched silicone SAMCO unit. Unlike the stock rubber hose, the silicone hose is made for longevity.

CUSCO Heat Sheild Install

When a downpipe is exchanged for an aftermarket unit, a common problem is the loss of the factory heatshield. The Cusco heatshield is an excellent deterrent of heatsoak for enthusiasts using top mount intercoolers.

When Andrew visited us, he already had an aftermarket down pipe installed but was experiencing bad heat soak. This resulted in a loss of engine power. Below are the pictures from the install.

Zero/Sports World League Turbo-back Exhaust Install

The Zero/Sports High Flow Downpipe with Catalytic Converter is the choice among many hardcore Subaru enthusiasts in Japan. This JDM down pipe has met the highest quality standards in Japan and been thoroughly tested on the streets and on the circuits. This pipe has a 4inch bell mouth entry with the rest of the pipe being 70mm in diameter.

Combined with the Zero/Sports World League Catback Exhaust, enthusiasts can enjoy an increase in performance without harsh exhaust noises. This exhaust also keeps the Subaru signature boxer rumble perfectly intact. While cruising, the loudness of the exhaust stays at a comfortable 70db. During acceleration, the loudness only increases to 78dB. The overall diameter of the exhaust piping is 3”. This exhaust has attained the difficult JASMA recognition as a result of Zero/Sports’ dedication to quality.

With this in mind, Charles decided that the High Flow Downpipe combined with the World League Catback was the perfect choice for himself and his family. With two young children, he wanted to ensure that they would not become uncomfortable with harsh exhaust drone entering into the cabin. The exhaust had OEM quality fitment with no modifications necessary to attain that stock “OEM” look with aftermarket performance.

To keep an eye on how his engine is performing, Charles also opted to install Defi-Link Meter BF Exhaust Temp, Boost, and Oil Pressure gauges. We thank Charles for stopping by and becoming part of the EAT Motorsports family.

Who can believe it's almost been a week since our Grand Opening? Thank you to all who came out and supported us!
